WHY WE GATHER IN CIRCLES

The act of being in circle together, whether actually sitting in a circle (in person) or in intention (i.e. online), embodies the perspective that we are all of equal worth, with no one person's worth being greater than another's.

It also reminds us that while we are individual and unique, we exist within many wholes, from our shared humanity to our membership of different communities, as well as being kin within a multispecies, multigenerational world.

Ecological enquiry is practised either in circles (i.e. groups) or in individual sessions (i.e. 1:1).

In both settings, Anna-Marie brings herself into the room as a participant and facilitator, meaning that she notices and investigates being ecological as well as holding the container and guiding the practise.

Ecological Enquiry is formed of three interwoven sub-enquiries:

  1. How do we experience being an ecological creature? Here, we hold curiosity about how we individually and collectively experience being ecological.
  2. What are the stories with which we are meeting the world? Here, we utilise critical thinking to investigate the roots, truth (lower case truth), and impacts of personal and collective stories, and seeing if this investigation generates stories that celebrates self and world as ecological.
  3. What ways of being are ecologically aligned? Here, we explore the blocks, challenges, hopes, and possibilities that arise when intending to be more ecologically curious, attuned, response-able, and generous. </aside>

Within ecological enquiry circles, we explore a shared theme or question in a way that enables a deep, rich, and cohesive investigation of that theme or question while giving space to what emerges.

Anna-Marie organises pre-themed circles that run for a set period of time (see current and past circles here) but circles can be co-designed with organisations to help organisational leaders and members explore an urgent or challenging organisation-wide theme.

Most circles meet 6 - 8 times over three or five months and online circles are generally designed for 3 - 5 participants per circle, since we stay in the room throughout and this enables a good diversity of perspectives and experiences with depthful participation. However, larger circles can work for in person circles.

As a circle participant, you have the opportunity to be supported as you investigate your stories, experiences, and worldviews while supporting your fellow circle members. You’ll also learn how to apply ecological enquiry in your life, in a way that works for you, so that you can gain more agency in how you are thinking about, experiencing, and being in the world.

Circles are also a really useful way of practising communicating and participating with integrity.

Individual (1:1) sessions are led by what is most important to you at the time of the session, whether that’s an experience you’d like insight into, a challenging situation you’d like to unravel, or a worldview you’d like to test. Investigating these together, we can bring to light some of the unnoticed and unexamined aspects and potentially discover a root experience, story, or worldview.

In 1:1 sessions, you’ll learn how to apply ecological enquiry in your life, in a way that works for you, so that you can gain more agency in how you are thinking about, experiencing, and showing up in the world.

These sessions can also support you in noticing, challenging, and discovering new stories.
